Rotary Club of Point West

2009-10 President

Al Howenstein

2009/2010 Presidential Message

The Rotary Club of Point West – Sacramento is celebrating its 25th year of “CARING AND SERVICE” to our community. We have contributed thousands of hours to community beautification efforts and to tutoring and mentoring students in Grammar, Middle and High Schools as well as contributing over $1,000,000 to service projects, schools and international programs that “MAKE A DIFFERENCE. Point West Rotary has helped “Dreams Come True” for thousands of people in our community and around the world.

As part of Rotary International Point West Rotary is one of over 32, 600 clubs world wide. Service Above Self is the motto of Rotary International. Here at Point West Rotary we have enhanced that motto, to Service Above Self, while Having Fun. Point West is known for its energy, fellowship, fun and commitment to our community.

We work closely with our charity partners to present two major fund raisers each year. In the early fall we have our Annual California Brewers Festival, raising funds that support children’s charities, primarily supporting our Charity Partner, Assistance League® of Sacramento’s, Operation School Bell® providing school clothing for over 2,200 children. In the spring we hold our Annual Festa di Vina, with local Restaurants and Wineries donating culinary delights and wonderful wines. Our charity partner for this event is Women’s Empowerment, who provide much needed training and support for women and their children in time of need.

With over 150 active and energized Rotarians we are actively involved in serving our community. We also support the American River Bike Trail, the Salvation Army’s annual Bell Ringing and Food & Toy distribution and Christmas Promise. We also have an annual Blood Drive with a challenge to other clubs to help save lives. Our Eagle Golf project provides a unique opportunity for people with challenges to enjoy the benefits of Golf.

As part of having fun, our softball team participates in the annual Rotary Softball League; we enjoy the camaraderie of our annual Bowling Bash and nurture friendship with our annual Cocktail Party and Mystery Diner. We celebrate national holidays and give recognition to our military personnel, our firefighters, teachers and police officers who make a difference in the world and our community.

Annually we select an international service project, partnering with a Rotary Club in another country to provide a much needed service or assistance. We also annually host a foreign exchange student, an International Group Study Exchange Team and send two high School students to Rotary Youth Leadership Camp.

Our membership is open to community and business members who are looking for an opportunity to give something back while enjoying the very unique fellowship and camaraderie of the Rotary Club of Point West-Sacramento.
